French Holidaying Close to Home

Le Meridien Noumea_Hotel

Next March our Plugged IN travel club will be heading to the little ‘Paris of the Pacific’, so save yourself a few long-haul flights to France and make sure you’re building up enough Travel Miles to join us in Noumea. Colonised by the French in the 1800s and made an official French territory in 1946, New Caledonia is a mix of Parisian chic, paired with the climate and natural wonders of a tropical paradise. So what makes it so special?

Fill your plate
Noumea is the capital of New Caledonia, making it the perfect destination to get a real taste of this diverse country (literally). In Noumea you’ll find a wide range of cuisines that proudly showcase the blend of cultures that this island nation has been built on. Satisfy your palate with French fine dining, fresh local seafood, or head to the markets for a huge selection of tropical fruits, spices, and other delights. Noumea’s gourmet food experiences won’t disappoint – with a fusion of unique flavours and French culinary techniques, you’re in for a treat.

Spot the wildlife
Now you know New Caledonia is a rich cultural mecca, but did you know it’s also one of the most bio-diverse places in the world? From mammals to sea creatures, birds to reptiles, it’s a hotspot for viewing species of animals and plants that you might not get the chance to see anywhere else in the world. Take a trip to the Aquarium des Lagoons or the Zoological and Forest Park to spot the wildlife for yourself.

See the sights & shop like a Parisian
With art and sculptures dating back to as early as 1500 BC and old colonial style buildings lining the streets, it’s an interesting and picturesque place to holiday. Take a stroll through the Tjibaou Cultural Centre or the Musée de Nouvelle-Calédonie to get your fill of the history of this beautiful island. Or, if you’d rather fill your suitcase instead, Noumea is known for its eclectic mix of shops. From Parisian couture to island style boutiques, you’ll have no problem picking up some goodies for you and the family.

Experience Noumea from the sea
Sure, kayaking or windsurfing might be fun, but if you’re in the mood for luxury, why not indulge in a half-day catamaran sailing experience? After soaking up all Noumea has to offer on land, it’s time to take to the water. On our upcoming Travel Club trip, our group will be sunning themselves from a catamaran as it tours around the island. With crystal clear waters and incredible surrounding islands, it’s an experience you won’t want to miss.

So, fancy eating fresh croissants for breakfast, experiencing French fine dining and maybe trying your hand at speaking some French, all while holidaying on a tropical island in the Pacific? Make sure you’re in our Plugged IN rewards programme to start building up enough Travel Miles for this dream holiday.
