Shielded sensors are manufactured with a shielding plate around the ferrite core of the induction coil. This has the effect of limiting the electromagnetic detection field to the front of the sensor. This in turn limits the sensing range but the sensor can be flush mounted with no effect from surrounding metals. Flush mounting the senor provides mechanical protection along with sensing directly adjacent to the sensor face.
