Distance Sensors & Position Sensitive Detectors NZ

Picking the right position sensor for your application depends on sensing mode, range and output type. Our range covers diffuse, through-beam and retroreflective photoelectric sensors for presence and position detection, plus true position sensitive detector (PSD), displacement sensors, and rotary encoders, for continuous closed-loop feedback.

Choosing the Right Position Sensor for Your Application

Sensing mode: diffuse, through-beam or retroreflective

Diffuse position sensors detect light reflected off the target, suiting short to medium range detection without a separate reflector. Through-beam sensors give the longest sensing distances and are largely unaffected by target colour or finish. Retroreflective sensors offer a mid-range alternative where through-beam wiring isn't practical, though shiny or highly reflective targets can cause false triggering.

Range and continuous position feedback

Where a simple on/off signal is not enough, distance position sensors and displacement sensors measure exact position along an axis. These industrial position sensors suit closed-loop control rather than basic presence detection.

Output type and controller compatibility

Confirm PNP or NPN output, cable length and connector type (M8 or M12) before ordering, to reduce the chance of rewiring your existing PLC.

Mounting, housing and environment

Match the housing and IP rating to the site: washdown areas, outdoor installations and dusty environments each place different demands on a sensor's enclosure. Browse sensor accessories for brackets, cables and reflectors, or see our limit switches for contact-based alternatives and proximity sensors for other non-contact options.

Position Sensitive Detector & Distance Sensors FAQs

What is the difference between a position sensitive detector and a standard proximity sensor?

A position sensitive detector measures distance or position along an axis and returns a continuous signal, while a proximity sensor typically gives a simple presence or absence output at a fixed range.

How do I choose the correct sensing range?

Measure the maximum and minimum distance between sensor and target under normal operation, then select a sensor rated above that range to allow for vibration and target variation.

Will these industrial position sensors work with my existing PLC?

Most of the range is available in PNP or NPN output; check your controller's input type before ordering. Matching the output type reduces the risk of rewiring the control panel.

Do you stock accessories for mounting and connecting these sensors?

Yes. You can find mounting brackets, connector cables, and reflectors are available in our sensor accessories range.

Can I get a quote for bulk quantity?

Yes, contact our team or request a quote from the cart page online for information on bulk pricing.
