Choosing the Right Ceiling Fan for the Room

An AC motor fan is the simpler, more affordable option and suits garages, workshops and other utility spaces where a bit of extra noise doesn't matter. A DC motor fan runs quieter and more efficiently, making it the better fit for bedrooms, living areas and offices.

Room size matters too; a fan that's too small won't move enough air, while an oversized fan can feel like overkill in a smaller space. For larger or open-plan rooms, two smaller fans often spread the air more evenly than one big one. If you're fitting a fan outdoors, make sure it's rated for the exposure it'll get, whether that's a covered veranda or a more open alfresco area.

What's the difference between AC and DC motor ceiling fans?

DC motor fans use a brushless design, draw less current, and are quieter, making them suitable for bedrooms and offices. AC motor fans usually cost less upfront and suit garages, workshops and utility areas. Product listings show wattage and speed to help match a fan to circuit capacity.

Can I fit a ceiling fan in a covered outdoor area?

Choose a fan explicitly rated for outdoor use, with an IP (ingress protection) rating matched to how exposed the location is. Check the IP rating on each listing before specifying for verandas, alfresco areas or other damp locations.

Do I need a registered electrician to install a ceiling fan?

Usually, yes. Fitting a fan on a new circuit or new wiring is prescribed electrical work. Replacing an existing fitting may be treated as maintenance depending on the job; a registered electrician is always the safest option.

What size ceiling fan suits the room?

Rooms up to 4m x 4m suit a blade span up to 1200mm; larger rooms up to 6m x 6m suit 1320mm or more. In open-plan or larger commercial spaces, two smaller fans spread air more evenly than one oversized unit. Contact our team for more information.
