With non-shielded sensors there is no shielding around the ferrite core. This allows the detection field to extend from the side of the sensor. This gives a greater detection range than the equivalent diameter shielded sensor (typically 2x), but as the field extends to the side of the sensor surrounding metals can interfere with the detection field. Thus to avoid detection problems the sensor cannot be flush mounted in metal.
